Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Criticizes AAP MPs' Merger with BJP

Meeting with President Murmu

On Tuesday, Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had a significant meeting with President Droupadi Murmu at the official residence in the capital. Following their discussion, Mann expressed his concerns regarding the recent merger of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) into the BJP, labeling it a violation of the Constitution and unconstitutional. He emphasized that they have demanded the cancellation of the memberships of these MPs who joined the BJP. Mann warned that if the central government misuses its power in Punjab, they will take action.

Concerns Over Democratic Principles

Mann stated that if seven out of ten MPs decide to merge with another party, there is no legal basis for such an action. He argued that they cannot act arbitrarily, as the country operates under the rule of law. If they had such disdain for the AAP, they should have resigned instead. After resigning, they could have contested elections from any party. Mann conveyed to the President how democracy is being undermined in Punjab, insisting that their memberships should be revoked. He also suggested that if there is no provision for recall, amendments should be introduced.

AAP's Response and Gathering

The MPs had joined the BJP just a week prior. AAP legislators gathered at Rail Bhawan near the President's residence, expressing hope that the President would deliver justice for the party. According to party leaders, the focus of the meeting between Mann and the President was on the defection of six AAP MPs from Punjab. Before the meeting, Mann posted on social media, stating, "Our struggle to protect Punjab's rights and interests continues. Today, I am heading to discuss pressing issues of Punjab with all AAP legislators and to raise the state's strong voice before the President."
