Punjab Chief Minister Engages with Villagers to Discuss Development Initiatives
Engagement with Rural Communities
On Sunday, Punjab's Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a conversation with a group of villagers under the shade of a tree, gathering their suggestions for creating a vibrant Punjab. He also informed them about the key initiatives of the Aam Aadmi Party-led government.
Informal Meeting with No Protocol
The meeting was notably informal, lacking both sofas and the usual government protocols. Villagers felt free to express their thoughts and engage in open dialogue with Mann about various political, social, and other issues affecting the state.
Improvement in Water Usage for Irrigation
Mann highlighted that when he took office, only 21% of canal water was being utilized for irrigation, a figure that has now risen to 63%. He credited the state government's dedicated efforts for ensuring that canal and river water reaches even the most remote villages.
Changes in Rice Cultivation Schedule
To address the challenges faced by farmers in selling their rice due to excessive moisture in October, the state government has altered the rice cultivation schedule. Mann assured that necessary plans and arrangements have been made to facilitate region-specific rice farming.
Request for Early Rice Procurement
He mentioned that he had contacted the central food minister to request that rice procurement begin on September 15, allowing farmers to sell their crops easily and without hassle.
Addressing Drug Issues and Water Crisis
Mann stated that this would enable farmers to bring moisture-free grains to the markets, ensuring a smooth procurement process. Regarding the drug menace, he noted that previous governments allegedly provided protection to drug cartels, but his administration has launched a campaign against narcotics.
Concerns Over Water Scarcity and Wedding Expenses
On the water crisis, he pointed out that 117 out of 153 blocks have groundwater classified as 'black dark zone.' He expressed concern over extravagant weddings in the state, stating they impose a heavy financial burden on ordinary farmers. Advocating for simpler weddings, Mann emphasized the need to help farmers escape the cycle of debt.
Farmers' Surprise at Chief Minister's Visit
Farmers were astonished by Mann's visit to their fields, noting that it was the first time in 70 years they had seen the state's leader engage directly with them on significant issues.
