Demand for Investigation into Drug Money Trail

Sunil Jakhar, the president of the Punjab BJP, has reached out to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, urging for a timely investigation into the drug money trail under the direct supervision of the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Jakhar emphasized the need to identify the powerful beneficiaries behind the drug trade, noting that the fortunes of several politicians in Punjab have dramatically changed in recent years. He pointed out that legislators who once arrived on bicycles now own luxury cars and farmhouses, suggesting that this transformation is not merely coincidental.

Urgent Need for Action

In his letter to CM Mann, Jakhar highlighted the necessity for immediate action to uncover the influential figures benefiting from the drug money trail, which he described as a primary source of distress for Punjab. He asserted that for the government to establish its credibility and effectively combat drug issues, such an investigation is crucial.

Addressing the Core Issue

Jakhar's correspondence stated, "Identifying the flow of money in the drug trade is essential; without it, efforts to eradicate drugs from Punjab will be not only futile but also a facade." He further noted that merely arresting thousands of addicts and small-time dealers would not make a significant impact. The focus must be on addressing the 'elephant in the room' by capturing the major players and arresting the ultimate beneficiaries, regardless of their political affiliations or positions. He warned that drug cartels in Punjab cannot thrive without some form of protection.

The letter also pointed out that the value of seized narcotics in Punjab runs into thousands of crores, underscoring the pervasive corruption in the region.
