Punjab BJP Considers Sikh Candidates for Upcoming Elections
Leadership Changes in Punjab BJP
The current president of the Punjab BJP, Sunil Jakhar, is set to complete his three-year term in July. In light of the upcoming elections in 2027, the party is contemplating the nomination of a Sikh candidate. Notable names being discussed include Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, and former Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal. Bittu is the grandson of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, who transitioned from Congress to BJP, while Badal is a cousin of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Potential Candidates for Party Leadership
Other individuals under consideration for the party leadership include former bureaucrat-turned-politician Jagmohan Singh Raju, Kewal Dhillon who joined BJP after resigning from Congress, senior BJP leader Manjeet Singh Rai, Rajya Sabha MP and Chandigarh University founder Chancellor Satnam Sandhu, former minister and ex-MLA Rana Gurmeet Sodhi, and ex-MLA Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa.
Focus on Sikh Representation
Sources indicate that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini, who is visiting Punjab and participating in party events and rallies, is advocating for a Sikh face as the candidate. Following a historic victory in West Bengal, where BJP secured 207 out of 290 seats, the party is now concentrating its efforts on Punjab. Prioritizing a Sikh candidate for the state unit president reflects a reality that the party cannot overlook.
Political Dynamics in Punjab
A party leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that while BJP has traditionally been a Hindu-centric party, a Sikh representation is crucial in Punjab. The political equation is straightforward: the Sikh community holds significant influence in the state, and Punjab has always had a Sikh Chief Minister. As the 2027 assembly elections approach, BJP is eager to shed its outsider image in a state where it has faced considerable challenges in establishing a foothold. However, Hindu leaders are not entirely out of the race; senior leader Tarun Chugh, who has long been involved in Punjab affairs, is also rumored to be a contender.
