Chandigarh, Nov 2: In a significant turn of events within Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh from Amritsar North submitted his resignation on Monday, following the departure of two other MLAs the day before.
Singh, who previously served as an IPS officer, also forwarded his resignation to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly.
He faced a five-year suspension from AAP in June 2025 due to alleged anti-party actions, particularly for opposing the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a case concerning Disproportionate Assets.
In a post on X, Singh expressed his gratitude to the people of Punjab, stating, "I will remain indebted to you until my last breath for the love and respect you have shown me."
He emphasized the need for unity to overcome the challenges facing Punjab, which he described as being plagued by drugs, extortion, gangsterism, and corruption, and called for a collective effort to restore the state to its former glory.
Singh claimed to have accomplished "90 percent of his targets," highlighting his commitment to ending the 'mai-baap' culture in politics and prioritizing public service.
He noted that during his tenure in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, he consistently advocated for the concerns of Amritsaris, addressing various local issues, including water and sewage management, and the Bargari sacrilege case.
Singh reiterated his dedication to clean politics and transparent governance, stating, "My sole purpose is 'Punjab First'. I have no personal interests beyond this."
On Sunday, Singh criticized AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, claiming the party had deviated from its foundational principles.
His resignation follows those of fellow MLAs Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra, who also resigned from the party and the Assembly on Sunday.
Pathanmajra, representing the Sanour constituency in Patiala district, sent his resignation to Kejriwal, citing immediate departure from the party.
He has been embroiled in controversies, including a rape case that led to his arrest upon returning from Australia to face investigation.
Jouramajra, who has served as a minister and represents the Samana constituency, announced his resignation via social media.
Reports suggest that tensions had been escalating between Jouramajra and party leadership after the appointment of former SAD leader Surjit Singh Rakhra as the in-charge of the Samana constituency, which reportedly displeased Jouramajra.
The resignations occur at a pivotal moment for AAP, as the party prepares for the upcoming 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
