New Delhi, April 25: In a significant operation, Pune Police executed a crackdown on illegal firearms, apprehending three habitual offenders and seizing a country-made pistol, a live cartridge, and a luxury BMW during a focused anti-extortion initiative.
The estimated value of the confiscated items is around Rs 7,40,500, according to officials.
This operation was part of a special campaign initiated by the Pune Police Commissionerate from April 18 to April 24, 2026, aimed at identifying and taking stringent action against those involved in illegal arms possession. Acting on specific intelligence, the Anti-Extortion Squad-02 (Khandani Virodhi Pathak-02) enhanced surveillance in the Parimandal-6 area.
On April 23, during routine patrols, Inspector Gaurav Dev's team received confidential information indicating that two known offenders, Omkar Ghule and Narayan Puri, were traveling in a white BMW in the Undri locality with an illegal firearm.
Following this tip-off, senior officers instructed the team to set up a trap. The police intercepted the vehicle near Jai Raj Washing Centre on the Undri Chowk–Mohammadwadi Road. The vehicle, registered as MH12 FU 9189, was stopped and searched thoroughly.
Inside the car, three suspects were found: Omkar Balasaheb Ghule (27), Narayan Vishwanath Puri (27), and Swapnil Nandkumar Hiremeth (25). A country-made pistol was recovered from Omkar Ghule, while a live cartridge was found with Narayan Puri. The BMW used by the suspects was also seized at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that all three individuals have prior criminal histories and have been linked to various serious offenses, raising alarms about their ongoing involvement in illegal activities.
A case has been filed at Kalepadal Police Station, and investigations are ongoing to trace the weapon's origin and any connections to other criminal networks.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma, and Additional Commissioner Pankaj Deshmukh, who are intensifying efforts to combat organized crime and illegal arms in Pune.
