This remarkable turnout from the global cycling community underscores Pune's emergence as a key player on the international professional cycling stage.

Event Details and Support

Organized by the Pune District Administration with robust backing from the Maharashtra Government, this five-day race will cover 437 kilometers, including one Prologue and four stages, showcasing Pune's varied landscapes, from historical sites to the rugged Deccan Plateau.

Unprecedented International Participation

Scheduled for January 19-23, this inaugural UCI 2.2 event has attracted confirmations from elite professional teams worldwide. Notable cycling nations such as France, Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, China, and Thailand will be represented. Asia will contribute the largest contingent with 78 riders, followed by 69 from Europe, 12 from Oceania, six from the US, and six from Africa. Unlike typical UCI 2.2 races that host up to 125 cyclists, the Pune Grand Tour will set a new record with 171 participants, including 29 competitive teams, one of which is an Indian team of six riders selected at the National Championship in Odisha.

A Milestone for Indian Cycling

Jitendra Dudi, the Pune District Collector and Officer In-Charge for the Pune Grand Tour, remarked, "This is a pivotal moment for Pune and India, and we are prepared to host a race that establishes a new global standard for UCI Asia Tours. This event signifies India's emergence as a significant force in the professional cycling arena."

Dudi further expressed pride in Pune's identity as the 'Cycle Capital' and emphasized that the inaugural event will mark a significant day for India to position itself as an international cycling hub. He noted, "Our goal is to create a lasting legacy for Pune and India, inspired by the 120-year legacy of the 'Tour de France.' The record participation reinforces our belief that India can soon have its own 'Pro Tour,' with Pune leading the way."

Technical Insights and Challenges

Pinaki Bysack, Technical Director of the Pune Grand Tour, stated, "To see a UCI 2.2 race attract a peloton of 171 is unprecedented. For India to achieve this in the inaugural year of the Pune Grand Tour is a significant milestone in the global cycling calendar. This remarkable turnout from five continents highlights the technical prestige and challenging terrain that Pune District offers. Managing such a large field demands precision and world-class standards, and I commend the vision and dedication of Pune District Collector Mr. Jitendra Dudi for creating the necessary infrastructure in record time, which is truly remarkable in Indian sports history."
