Puducherry Achieves Top Rank in PM Crop Insurance Scheme Implementation
Significance of Agriculture in India
Approximately 60% of India's population relies directly or indirectly on agriculture. Despite advancements in technology, a significant number of farmers still depend on rain-fed farming. Natural calamities such as droughts, storms, and unseasonal rains often lead to crop failures, causing substantial losses for farmers. To address these challenges, the central government launched the PM Crop Insurance Scheme, which provides financial assistance to farmers in the event of natural disasters.
Puducherry's Successful Implementation
Several state governments have successfully implemented this scheme, ensuring timely compensation for farmers. In this context, the Puducherry government has achieved a notable milestone. The Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department of Puducherry not only successfully executed the PM Crop Insurance Scheme but also secured the top rank among smaller states for timely compensation to farmers.
Recognition and Achievements
As a result of its effective implementation, the Puducherry government received recognition from the central government. The PM Crop Insurance Scheme, aimed at farmer welfare, was successfully rolled out by the Puducherry Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department during the years 2016-2017 and 2022-2023. To date, around 72,000 farmers have registered under the scheme, with approximately 25,000 farmers affected by natural disasters. Compensation amounting to ₹29 crores has already been disbursed to these farmers for crop damage.
