Protests Demand Accountability

In response to the gang rape incident at Gopalpur Beach, Congress leaders and supporters have staged protests, marching towards the Chief Minister's residence while demanding his resignation. Ajay Kumar Lallu, a Congress leader, expressed that the incident has brought shame to the entire nation. A group of ten individuals allegedly assaulted a woman, and not all suspects have been apprehended. Additionally, another case of rape involving a 16-year-old girl was reported in Keonjhar yesterday. Lallu criticized the government for discussing the Subhadra scheme while women in the state remain unsafe, emphasizing their demand for the Chief Minister's resignation.


Details of the Incident

On Tuesday, police reported the arrest of ten individuals, including four minors, in connection with the gang rape of a 20-year-old woman at the popular Gopalpur beach in Odisha. According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday night when the victim, a college student, visited the beach with her classmate and boyfriend to celebrate the Raja festival. In her complaint filed at the Gopalpur police station, she stated that while they were seated in a secluded area, a group of ten men surrounded them, restrained her boyfriend, and took turns assaulting her.


Police Response and Arrests

A police official revealed that initially, seven suspects were detained for questioning, but later all ten were arrested. The suspects attempted to flee to another state when they were apprehended. Superintendent of Police Shravana Vivek M stated that three of the accused took turns assaulting the young woman while the remaining seven stood by.
