Protests Erupt Over Delhi High Court's Bail Decision in Unnao Rape Case
Protests Near Parliament Against Bail Decision
On Saturday, the Delhi Police apprehended Congress leader Mumtaz Patel along with several demonstrators who were conducting a sit-in near the Parliament. This protest was in response to a recent Delhi High Court ruling that suspended the life sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP MLA, in the Unnao rape case involving a minor.
The protesters arrived at the site around 4 PM, occupying the road while chanting slogans and demanding the revocation of Sengar's bail, which was granted on December 23.
Authorities announced via loudspeakers that the area was not approved for protests and instructed the crowd to disperse. When the protesters refused to leave, police intervened and made several arrests.
This demonstration followed a protest by the complainant’s mother and others outside the Delhi High Court against the same ruling.
While the Delhi High Court has granted Sengar bail pending his appeal, he is still incarcerated due to a separate 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the complainant’s father, for which he has not received bail.
Allegations Against Investigating Officer
The complainant has reached out to the Central Bureau of Investigation, requesting that a first information report be filed against the investigating officer, whom she accuses of colluding with Sengar. She claims that the investigation was conducted dishonestly, allowing Sengar and other accused individuals to benefit from intentional oversights and manipulation of facts.
Additionally, she alleges that false statements were attributed to her in the chargesheet. Recently, the Central Bureau of Investigation has approached the Supreme Court to contest the Delhi High Court's decision.
