Protests Erupt Over Conditions at Newark Immigration Detention Center
Ongoing Protests at Delaney Hall
Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) escalated on Saturday outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey. Activists have been rallying for nearly a week, advocating for detainees who they claim are subjected to inhumane treatment. The demonstrations attracted a significant police presence, with officers equipped with riot shields stationed at the entrance.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on Friday the establishment of a designated peaceful protest zone near the facility, a decision made in light of safety concerns stemming from earlier protests in Minneapolis that resulted in the deaths of two American citizens. On Saturday, she expressed gratitude towards the majority of peaceful protesters while urging them to maintain calm after six individuals were arrested for not complying with police dispersal orders late Friday night. Among those arrested, five were from outside New Jersey.
"To those traveling from out of state to incite chaos, your presence is not beneficial to the detainees or their families, and it jeopardizes the safety of New Jersey," Sherrill stated during a press briefing. The New Jersey State Police reported that one individual faced charges of disorderly conduct and endangerment, while the others were charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of justice. The arrested included one person from Pennsylvania, four from New York, and one from New Jersey.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) commented on the situation, labeling the arrests as part of a "coordinated campaign of violence against our ICE law enforcement." They emphasized the need to end violence against law enforcement personnel. Supporters of the detainees were seen banging drums and chanting slogans like, "Shut down Delaney Hall, free them all!" and "End this racist system!" Some protesters displayed signs demanding the removal of ICE, while healthcare workers advocated against deportations.
In contrast, pro-ICE demonstrators waved American flags and shouted, "USA, USA," holding signs that read "Make America Great Again" and "Support ICE." One protester, Michael, defended ICE's actions, stating, "They are simply doing their jobs and face immense scrutiny. These officers risk their lives daily to ensure our safety." The DHS reported that ICE agents have faced threats and assaults from protesters in New Jersey, thanking local law enforcement for their support.
In response to allegations of violence within the detention center, GEO Group stated that staff had to intervene in a physical altercation among detainees on Thursday, employing control measures, including limited use of chemical agents, in line with federal standards. They assured that medical personnel evaluated the detainees involved and found no serious injuries.
