Protests Erupt Over Conditional Bail Granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao Rape Case
Public Outcry Following Court's Decision
On Friday, a significant protest took place outside the Delhi High Court in response to the conditional bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who was expelled from the party. Demonstrators gathered near the court premises, vocally opposing the bail order. This protest arises amidst serious concerns expressed by the Unnao rape victim and her family regarding the suspension of Sengar's prison sentence.
Women Lead the Demonstration
The protest saw a large turnout, predominantly consisting of women, who raised their voices against the court's decision to suspend Sengar's sentence. A heavy police presence was deployed to maintain order, as restrictions were in place in the area. Activist Yogita Bhayana addressed the crowd, describing the demonstration as a peaceful appeal against what they perceive as a grave injustice.
Calls for Justice and Criticism of the Court's Ruling
Bhayana stated, "We have come to the High Court to peacefully appeal for justice for our daughter and to request a hearing on our petition. If we do not receive justice, we will continue to protest, as it is our right." Congress leader Mumtaz Patel also criticized the ruling, labeling it a dangerous precedent. He remarked, "This is a significant setback. The way the High Court granted Sengar relief based on a technical flaw will undermine the trust of not only the victim's family but also women across the nation."
Victim's Mother Plans to Appeal to the Supreme Court
The victim's mother emotionally rejected the bail application and announced plans to approach the Supreme Court. She expressed, "His bail application should be dismissed. We will knock on the doors of the Supreme Court. Our faith in the High Court has been shaken. If we do not find justice there, we will seek it elsewhere." She also demanded severe punishment in the case of her husband's death while in custody. Recently, the Delhi High Court suspended Sengar's sentence in the 2017 Unnao rape case, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor. He has challenged his sentence in the High Court, where his appeal is currently pending.
