Protests Erupt Over Codeine Cough Syrup Issue in Uttar Pradesh
Protests Against Codeine Cough Syrup in Uttar Pradesh
On Friday, Mukesh Verma, a legislator from the Samajwadi Party, led a protest in Uttar Pradesh concerning the issue of codeine cough syrup. He raised concerns about the involvement of high-ranking officials and questioned who would be held accountable for the lives of children affected by this issue.
Verma expressed his worries about the codeine cough syrup available in the market, stating that the situation has escalated beyond acceptable limits, with poison being sold under the guise of cough syrup. He alleged that several influential and wealthy individuals are part of this network.
Dressed in protest attire adorned with slogans, the legislator also inquired whether the homes of those implicated would be demolished by bulldozers, emphasizing the tragic loss of innocent lives and demanding accountability.
Additional Protests and Concerns
Another Samajwadi Party member, Brijesh Yadav, joined the protests by cycling to the assembly to voice his concerns over the cough syrup issue. He highlighted that this matter has become a significant concern, with discussions surrounding the distribution of toxic syrup by the ruling party.
Yadav pointed out that there is widespread discourse in the state and across the nation regarding the BJP's alleged distribution of poisonous cough syrup, which has led to the deaths of impoverished children. He accused those involved of profiting from this tragedy and fleeing the country, while the BJP government allegedly provides them protection. He called for the immediate arrest of those responsible.
Government Response
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the media on Friday, providing detailed information regarding the ongoing situation. He announced that actions have been initiated under the NDPS Act, led by the Uttar Pradesh Police and the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA).
