Protests Erupt Outside Delhi High Court Over Unnao Rape Case Bail Decision
Demonstrations Against Bail for Convicted MLA
In New Delhi, a large group of demonstrators, including women activists and the mother of the Unnao rape survivor, gathered outside the Delhi High Court on Friday. This protest followed the recent suspension of the sentence for Kuldeep Sengar, a former BJP MLA convicted in the case.
The protesters displayed placards and chanted slogans like “Balatkariyo ko sanrakshan dena band kro” (stop protecting rapists), voicing their support for the survivor.
Activists from the All India Democratic Women’s Association joined the protest, alongside activist Yogita Bhayana and the survivor's mother.
In an interview, the survivor's mother expressed her anguish, stating she was there to protest due to her daughter's immense suffering.
She clarified, “I am not blaming the entire high court, but only the two judges whose decision has shattered our trust.”
The mother noted that previous judges had delivered justice, but now the accused had been granted bail.
“This is an injustice towards our family. We will approach the Supreme Court, as I have faith in it,” she added.
Earlier this week, the Delhi High Court ordered Sengar's release on bail while he appeals his conviction from a trial court in December 2019.
The court mandated that Sengar must not approach the victim's residence or threaten her or her mother, warning that any breach of these conditions would result in automatic bail cancellation.
Despite this, Sengar will remain incarcerated as he is also serving a 10-year sentence related to the custodial death of the survivor's father and has not been granted bail in that matter.
