Protests Erupt in New Delhi Over Violence Against Hindus in Bangladesh

A significant protest unfolded outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, led by Hindutva groups in response to the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. The demonstration, which resulted in several arrests, reflects growing tensions over communal violence in the region. The protest was sparked by the brutal killing of Dipu Chandra Das, accused of blasphemy, amidst wider unrest following the death of a student leader. As similar protests occurred in West Bengal, concerns about the safety of diplomatic missions were raised by Bangladesh's foreign ministry. This situation has drawn international attention, including remarks from the UN Secretary-General regarding the need for safety for all citizens.

Protests Erupt in New Delhi Over Violence Against Hindus in Bangladesh

Demonstration Outside Bangladesh High Commission

On Tuesday, a large group of individuals affiliated with Hindutva organizations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. They were protesting against the recent communal violence in Bangladesh, particularly the lynching of a Hindu man, according to reports.

Delhi Police detained several protesters following disturbances in the high-security area surrounding the diplomatic mission. Authorities had anticipated the protest and had deployed extra police and paramilitary forces, setting up multiple layers of barricades. Despite these measures, managing the crowd proved challenging for law enforcement.

Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man, was brutally killed in Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, on Thursday night by a mob that accused him of blasphemy. Reports indicate that his body was tied to a tree and set ablaze. So far, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with this incident.

This violence occurred amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh, triggered by the death of student leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot wounds in a Singapore hospital on the same day. Hadi was a key figure in the 2024 student protests that led to the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina administration.
