Tensions Rise in Seraj Valley

Munish Sood
MANDI: Tensions escalated in the Seraj Valley of Himachal Pradesh as local residents and political activists confronted Forest Minister Jagat Singh Negi during his visit on Friday. Protesters displayed black flags and reportedly threw a shoe at the minister's vehicle, leading to a police case against 58 individuals.

The FIR was lodged at the Janjheli police station following a complaint from Congress leader Jagdish Reddy, a representative from the Seraj constituency. The unrest was triggered by significant local opposition to the government's decision to relocate the Horticulture College from Thunag, which residents believe will negatively impact the area's development and educational opportunities.

Police Investigation Underway

According to police reports, 12 individuals have been identified by name and address, while efforts continue to determine the identities of the others involved. Once confirmed, their names will be included in the FIR.

The case has been filed under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS):
• Section 126(2): Conspiracy to disturb public peace
• Section 179(2): Assault on a public servant
• Section 191(2): Attempt to intimidate a public official
• Section 190: Causing public disorder

Minister's Visit Sparks Outrage

Mandi Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma confirmed the FIR's registration and stated that investigations are ongoing.

Minister Negi's visit occurred 25 days after a severe natural disaster impacted parts of the Seraj Valley, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods. Instead of providing relief, his presence incited anger among locals and BJP supporters, who accused the government of negligence and insisted that the horticulture college should remain in its current location.

As protests intensified in Janjheli, demonstrators surrounded the minister's rest house. When he attempted to depart, his vehicle was obstructed by irate residents, including women, who waved black flags. Witnesses reported that a shoe was thrown at his car amid the turmoil.

Minister Claims Political Motivation Behind Protest

In light of the incident, Minister Jagat Singh Negi suggested that the protest was politically motivated and orchestrated by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He stated, “This was not a spontaneous protest but a deliberate attempt to incite unrest.”

Although the situation was eventually controlled, it raised significant concerns regarding public sentiment, administrative decisions, and the political tensions that have emerged following the natural disaster.
