On World Mental Health Day, spiritual leader Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emphasized the importance of mental health awareness, asserting that kindness, compassion, and joy are intrinsic to human nature. He pointed out that violence and emotional turmoil often arise from deeper psychological and social issues.

Gurudev reflected on human behavior, noting that aggression and a lack of empathy frequently stem from feelings of isolation, fear, and rejection, as well as a diminished sense of belonging. He stressed that understanding these root causes is vital for addressing emotional distress and nurturing a more compassionate society.

He highlighted the connection between mental health and violence, urging society to shift its focus from mere punishment to helping individuals comprehend and transform their behaviors. Just as those with physical ailments receive medical care, individuals exhibiting harmful behaviors also require effective tools and techniques to tackle their emotional and psychological struggles.

Mental health has become a significant global concern, impacting individuals across both developed and developing nations, regardless of their social or economic status. Young people, in particular, are increasingly facing challenges such as depression, loneliness, aggression, and emotional instability.

Gurudev pointed out that loneliness is a rising issue in contemporary society, affecting even those with financial stability and social support. He suggested that the inability to find comfort within oneself and achieve inner peace can exacerbate feelings of isolation.

He noted that emotional well-being is seldom systematically taught at home or in educational institutions, leaving many without the necessary skills to cope with anger, frustration, jealousy, and sadness. Therefore, fostering emotional awareness and learning to respond constructively to challenging feelings is crucial for cultivating healthier individuals and communities.

Breathing Techniques and Meditation for Mental Wellness

Gurudev highlighted the significance of breath in managing emotions, describing breathing exercises and meditation as effective tools for stress management and emotional balance. He explained that various emotional states are linked to changes in breathing patterns, making conscious breathing essential for enhancing awareness of both mind and body.

He mentioned Sudarshan Kriya, a breathing technique taught through the Art of Living, as a method practitioners use to combat feelings of anxiety and despair. Such practices empower individuals to gain better control over their thoughts and emotions, rather than being overwhelmed by them.

Gurudev also stressed the importance of living in the present moment. He observed that children can swiftly transition from sadness to happiness, suggesting that adults can similarly learn to release negative emotions instead of holding onto them for extended periods.

He compared mental well-being to physical hygiene, advocating for daily attention to mental health, just as individuals maintain physical cleanliness through regular habits. A few minutes dedicated to breathing exercises and meditation can restore calmness and positivity, while self-acceptance fosters compassion towards others.

The Role of Service and Community in Healing

Gurudev emphasized the significance of community and purpose, stating that serving others selflessly can enhance emotional well-being and foster a deeper sense of connection. He encouraged young people to engage in acts of service, which can help them cultivate empathy, open their hearts to others, and discover a greater sense of purpose.

His message on World Mental Health Day underscores the necessity of treating mental health as a crucial aspect of overall well-being. He suggested that increased emotional awareness, supportive relationships, meditation, breathing practices, and community involvement can lead to a society where compassion replaces isolation, and individuals feel a stronger sense of belonging.

The overarching message is that mental health deserves attention, understanding, and care. Building a healthier society starts with acknowledging emotional struggles, encouraging individuals to seek appropriate support, and creating environments where kindness, connection, and psychological well-being can thrive.
