On Tuesday, August 18, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to visit Deori in Mandi district, marking a significant moment in a nearly three-year saga involving a school affected by disaster, a commitment made to local youth, and a contentious delay in the opening of its newly built facility.

Gandhi is expected to tour the newly constructed Government Senior Secondary School in Deori and engage with the students. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has characterized this visit as personal and private, rather than an official government event.

This visit holds particular importance due to Priyanka Gandhi’s previous connection with the school. In September 2023, amidst severe cloudbursts, floods, and landslides impacting Himachal Pradesh, she visited Mandi's disaster-stricken areas, including Deori in the Drang Assembly constituency, to assess the damage. During her visit, local residents and students informed her about the dire state of their school and requested assistance for its reconstruction.

The school had sustained significant damage during the 2023 disaster, compelling students to continue their education under challenging conditions. Following the appeals made during her visit, the reconstruction was initiated, leading to the completion of a new school building.

Constructed at a cost of approximately ₹4.69 crore, the new facility is now ready for use. However, instead of concluding the matter, the school found itself at the center of an unusual controversy.

The situation escalated in July when Education Minister Rohit Thakur arrived in Deori for the inauguration of the new school building. Preparations were underway, and the minister was present at the venue when he received instructions from Shimla to halt the inauguration proceedings.

Consequently, the inauguration was canceled, and the plaque intended for the ceremony was removed, leaving the new school building without an official opening.

This abrupt cancellation sparked considerable discussion in the community, raising questions about why the inauguration of a completed government school was halted after the minister's arrival.

The situation became particularly sensitive due to reports suggesting that the government preferred Priyanka Gandhi to inaugurate the building during a future visit to Himachal Pradesh.

The matter eventually reached the Himachal Pradesh High Court through a public interest petition. During the proceedings, the court noted that while the new school building was completed, it remained unused. The court questioned why students were still studying elsewhere when a new facility was available.

The court sought responses from the state government and relevant authorities, transforming what began as a dispute over an inauguration into a broader issue regarding the utilization of public infrastructure and the welfare of schoolchildren.
