Call for Discussion on Air Quality

On Wednesday, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the need for Parliament to prioritize discussions on the deteriorating air quality in various regions of the country. Speaking to reporters, she highlighted the importance of addressing pollution and other pressing issues.


As winter sets in, a thick layer of smog enveloped the national capital, Delhi, on Wednesday morning. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) recorded at 7 AM was 376, categorizing it as 'very poor'.


Severe Pollution Levels in Delhi

The area around India Gate and Kartavya Path was shrouded in toxic haze, with an AQI of 356, also falling into the 'very poor' category. Other significant locations, including Alipur (366), Aaya Nagar (360), Burari (396), Dhaula Kuan (303), and Dwarka (377), reported alarming pollution levels, underscoring the widespread nature of the crisis in Delhi.


Previously, senior Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticized the government for the worsening air pollution situation in Delhi, labeling it a threat to residents' lives.


Concerns Over Long-Term Health Effects

During a press conference, Dikshit noted that the air quality has been deteriorating over the past 6-7 years. He referenced warnings from medical professionals, stating that prolonged exposure to such pollution could significantly reduce life expectancy. Opposition MPs are calling for discussions on the poor air quality index during the winter session.
