Priyanka Gandhi Opposes New Employment Bill, Raises Concerns Over Rural Workers' Rights
Opposition to the VB-G Ramji Bill
On Tuesday, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed strong opposition to the Developed India Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Bill, 2025, also known as the VB-G Ramji Bill. She argued that the proposed legislation would undermine the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and negate the provision of 100 days of guaranteed employment.
During a debate in the Lok Sabha, the MP from Wayanad emphasized that no bill should be rushed through Parliament without adequate consultation or discussion. She accused the government of pushing the bill through due to personal biases or interests.
Call for Withdrawal and Further Review
Addressing the house, Priyanka Gandhi insisted that the bill should be withdrawn and a new one introduced by the government. She referenced Mahatma Gandhi, stating, "Although I have no personal connection to Mahatma Gandhi, he is akin to family for me. This sentiment resonates across the nation. The bill should be sent to a permanent committee for thorough examination. No law should be hastily passed due to personal passion or prejudice."
Concerns Over Impact on Rural Workers
The Congress leader raised alarms about the potential effects of the proposed law on rural laborers, claiming it would weaken the right to guaranteed income under MGNREGA. She also highlighted issues related to delays in wage payments under the current scheme, stating, "I fail to understand the rationale behind this name change. This new bill will undermine the right to income for at least 100 days. Wherever you go, MGNREGA workers will tell you they have not received their wages."
Introduction of the Bill by the Agriculture Minister
Earlier in the day, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan sought permission to introduce the Developed India Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Bill, 2025, also referred to as the G Ramji Bill. The aim of this legislation is to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
