Priyanka Gandhi Demands Action from PM Modi Over Alleged 'Purification' Incident in Uttarakhand
Call for Action on Alleged Incident
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action regarding the alleged 'purification' controversy that arose following Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's rally in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. She stated that if the Prime Minister truly respects the Constitution, he should ensure that an FIR is filed and that action is taken under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Congress Criticizes the Haldwani Incident
According to Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally at Ramleela Maidan in Haldwani on August 8. The party claims that a 'purification' ritual allegedly took place after the event, which they view as disrespectful to the Dalit community and to Kharge himself.
In a social media post, Priyanka Gandhi highlighted that the alleged purification incident violates both the Constitution and the SC/ST laws. She called on the Prime Minister to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted and that legal action is taken.
Demand for Action from the Prime Minister
In her statement, Priyanka Gandhi directly addressed PM Modi, asserting that if he respects the Constitution, he must ensure that an FIR is filed regarding the alleged act in Uttarakhand. She questioned why no action had been taken nearly 20 days after the incident.
Rahul Gandhi's Previous Call for FIR
Prior to Priyanka Gandhi's remarks, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, also demanded that PM Modi file an FIR concerning the controversy. He criticized the alleged purification as indicative of a mindset rooted in untouchability and called for action under the SC/ST Act.
Rahul Gandhi further questioned why an FIR had not yet been filed following the incident. Congress leaders argue that immediate action is necessary in matters concerning the dignity and equality of the Dalit community.
BJP Dismisses Allegations as Political
The BJP has rejected Congress's accusations, claiming that Rahul Gandhi's statements attempt to create division within society and that Congress is politicizing the issue. This has intensified the back-and-forth between Congress and the BJP regarding the purification controversy.
Why Demand Action Under SC/ST Act?
Congress leaders argue that if an individual is subjected to humiliation or discrimination based on caste, legal action should be taken under the relevant laws. Priyanka Gandhi has reiterated her demand for an FIR and action under the SC/ST Act against those responsible.
However, the specific legal provisions applicable to any incident and the subsequent actions following an FIR depend on investigations and legal processes. Therefore, the final legal conclusions will emerge only after thorough investigation.
Political Discourse Intensifies
The Haldwani controversy has escalated from a local issue to a topic of national discussion. Many Congress leaders have framed it as a matter of social equality and respect for Dalits. Following Rahul Gandhi's comments, Priyanka Gandhi's response has further intensified Congress's stance on the issue.
With Priyanka Gandhi's demands now in the spotlight, attention turns to whether the central and Uttarakhand governments will take any official legal action. Currently, Congress continues to call for an FIR and action under the SC/ST laws, while the BJP maintains that these allegations are merely political.
