Congress Leader's Strong Remarks on Legislative Setback

Following the unsuccessful attempt to pass the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a fierce critique against the government on Saturday. She described the constitutional amendment bill as a 'conspiracy' by the central government aimed at establishing perpetual rule and undermining democracy. Priyanka accused the government of facing significant international pressure, which she claimed is now 'evident' and visible to the public.

During a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, Priyanka stated that the government introduced this bill for delimitation, which the opposition argues would weaken southern and northeastern states. However, she emphasized that the bill's failure in the Lok Sabha represents a 'victory for democracy' and showcases the unity of the opposition. Priyanka Gandhi remarked that what transpired yesterday was a monumental win for democracy, thwarting the government's plot to alter the federal structure and weaken democratic principles.

She asserted that this was a triumph for the Constitution, the nation, and the unity of the opposition, clearly reflected on the faces of the ruling party leaders. Priyanka expressed her belief that there is a scheme in place for the ruling party to maintain power at any cost. To achieve this, they are allegedly planning to use women to secure their position indefinitely. She noted that if the bill had passed, it would have been seen as a victory for them, but if it failed, they could label other parties as anti-women to portray themselves as champions of women's rights. Priyanka emphasized that becoming a true protector of women's rights is not an easy task.

The constitutional amendment bill, which aimed to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies starting from the 2029 parliamentary elections, did not pass in the lower house on Friday. During the voting on the 'Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill 2026', there were 298 votes in favor and 230 against. A two-thirds majority is required to pass a constitutional amendment in the Lok Sabha. A total of 528 members participated in the voting, with 352 votes needed for the bill's approval. The government stated that the opposition missed a historic opportunity to grant rights and respect to women.
