Priya Kapoor Seeks Supreme Court Records in Sanjay Kapoor Divorce Case

Priya Kapoor has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, asserting that she is the legally wedded wife and rightful heir of the late businessman Sanjay Kapoor. She is requesting certified copies of all records related to the divorce proceedings between Sanjay Kapoor and actress Karisma Kapoor from 2016. In her petition, she emphasized the necessity of accessing these confidential court documents to protect her legal rights concerning the deceased's estate.

Background of the Divorce Proceedings

According to the application, Sanjay Kapoor had filed a transfer petition in 2016 to move his divorce case from a family court in Mumbai to Delhi. During the pendency of these proceedings, both Sanjay Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor amicably resolved their disputes, leading the Supreme Court to settle the petition on April 8, 2016, after recording the detailed terms of their agreement. Priya Kapoor has informed the Supreme Court that Sanjay Kapoor passed away in England on June 12, 2025.

Claiming Rights Over the Deceased's Estate

Citing her marriage to the deceased on April 3, 2017, Priya Kapoor has asserted her claim to the estate and legal matters of Sanjay Kapoor, stating her direct interest in these affairs. Therefore, she believes she is entitled to receive certified copies of the court records. The petition requests the Supreme Court registry to issue a certified copy of the complete document file for transfer petition (Civil) number 214/2016, which includes arguments, annexures, orders, settlement documents, and other relevant applications. Since Priya Kapoor was not a party in the original proceedings, she has been advised to formally appear in court through an affidavit as per the Supreme Court's rules and procedures.
