Prime Minister Modi's Anticipated Trip to the U.S.

A recent report indicates that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States next month. During this visit, he is likely to participate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, and there is a possibility of a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Details of the UNGA Participation

Modi's trip is scheduled amidst declining trade relations, and he aims to discuss trade-related issues with President Trump. Sources suggest that, in addition to Trump, Modi may also hold high-level meetings with other foreign leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelensky. The UNGA summit will take place in New York City, starting the week of September 23, when global leaders are expected to arrive.

80th Session of the UNGA

The 80th session of the UNGA will commence on September 9, with high-level general debates running from September 23 to 29. According to a provisional list of speakers, India's head of government is set to address the assembly on the morning of September 26. Additionally, leaders from China, Pakistan, Israel, and Bangladesh will also speak on that day.

Trump's Address and Interest in Meeting Modi

President Trump is scheduled to address the UNGA session on September 23, marking his first address at the assembly during his second term. Although this is a provisional schedule, changes may occur in the coming weeks. Sources have indicated that Trump is keen to meet Modi, having previously invited him to Washington during the G7 summit in Canada last June. Modi declined the invitation, concerned about a potential meeting between Trump and Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, who was also in the U.S. at that time. If the meeting occurs, Modi may extend an invitation to Trump to visit India for the upcoming Quad summit in October, which includes Australia and Japan as other members.

Previous Engagements and Trade Discussions

Earlier this year, Modi visited the U.S. in February for a bilateral meeting with Trump. Following their discussions, both leaders issued a joint statement announcing plans to negotiate the first phase of a mutually beneficial, multi-sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by the end of 2025.

Tariffs Imposed by Trump

While India and the U.S. were negotiating the BTA, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on India, citing New Delhi's decision to purchase Russian oil and arms as a contributing factor. He claimed this action was exacerbating the conflict in Ukraine. Subsequently, an additional 25% tariff was announced, effective from August 27. India has criticized these tariffs as "unfair and unjust," with the Ministry of External Affairs stating that the government will take all necessary measures to protect the nation's "interests and economic security." India has also received support from the international community, including Russia and China, for its stance. However, Trump has defended his tariffs, asserting they have negatively impacted the Russian economy.
