Prime Minister Modi's Significant Two-Day Visit to West Bengal
Overview of the Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to West Bengal starting Saturday. This marks his first trip to the state following the assembly election results, making it a crucial moment in the current political landscape. During this visit, he will launch several development projects worth billions, release the next installment of the 'PM-Kisan' scheme for farmers, and strengthen the defense sector by commissioning three indigenous warships into the navy. Additionally, he will engage in extensive public outreach through the National Yoga Day event in Kolkata.
Political Significance
Modi's visit comes at a politically significant time for West Bengal, following the BJP's decisive victory in the elections, which has altered the state's political dynamics. The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, is facing numerous challenges, including the arrests of several party leaders, resignations of key figures, and growing internal dissent. In this shifting political environment, the Prime Minister's trip is vital for both development and political messaging.
Details of the Visit
In a post on 'X', Modi stated, 'I will be in West Bengal for various events on June 20 and 21. June 20 is particularly significant as it marks 'West Bengal Day,' which will be celebrated in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district.' He mentioned that he would initiate several development schemes from Tarakeswar and release the next installment of the PM-Kisan scheme, which includes key agricultural initiatives beneficial to the farmers of Bengal.
Yoga Day and Defense Initiatives
Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the Yoga Day events planned in Kolkata, stating, 'I am delighted that such an event is being organized in the city.' Following the Yoga Day celebrations, he will participate in the commissioning ceremony of three warships designed and built in India.
Commitment to Development
A leader from the state BJP remarked that through development, agriculture, national security, and cultural programs, the BJP-led central government aims to demonstrate its commitment to the state while strengthening ties with crucial demographics such as farmers, youth, and the middle class. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, this year's theme for West Bengal Day is 'West Bengal: Heritage, Harmony, and Development,' reflecting the state's cultural richness and aspirations for social unity and growth.
Development Projects and Initiatives
During the event, the Prime Minister will dedicate or lay the foundation for numerous development projects in sectors such as railways, agriculture, rural development, fisheries, and animal husbandry. The statement noted that Modi will also release the 23rd installment of the PM-Kisan scheme, amounting to ₹18,880 crores, benefiting over 9.44 crore farmers nationwide.
Impact on West Bengal
In West Bengal alone, over 45 lakh beneficiaries will receive more than ₹900 crores, bringing the total disbursed under this scheme in the state to over ₹15,000 crores. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation for railway projects worth approximately ₹590 crores, including the Sankrail-Santragachi link line project. Furthermore, he will inaugurate 49 road infrastructure projects under the PM Gram Sadak Yojana to enhance connectivity in rural areas.
International Yoga Day Celebration
On June 21, Modi will lead the national celebration of the 12th International Yoga Day in Kolkata, marking the first time the state hosts the main event. This celebration will take place on the famous Red Road, with a large turnout expected. Additionally, at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata, the Prime Minister will commission three naval vessels that were designed and built domestically.
Weather Concerns
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed confidence that despite forecasts of rain, the planned events for 'West Bengal Day' and 'International Yoga Day' will proceed as scheduled. He stated, 'Our government is working diligently. While rain is anticipated, we have several events planned... they will be conducted smoothly.'
