New Delhi, May 27: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on citizens to exercise caution as the nation experiences extreme heat, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated during these challenging conditions.

In a series of posts on social media, the Prime Minister highlighted that children, the elderly, and outdoor workers are particularly at risk from the intense heat, urging everyone to heed the signs of heat exhaustion, which can escalate to heatstroke if ignored.

"Various regions in India are facing soaring temperatures and the associated challenges. This heat is tough on all of us, and I encourage everyone to take as many precautions as possible," he stated.

Modi advised individuals to remain hydrated, carry water when going out, and extend kindness by offering water to others, as such gestures can be very helpful in these conditions.

"Be alert for symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, or extreme fatigue. If someone appears unwell, weak, or develops a headache, it is crucial to move them to a cool, shaded area immediately," he added.

The Prime Minister also encouraged citizens to assist those suffering from the heat by providing water and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) to help alleviate their discomfort. "In these conditions, timely care and attention are vital," he remarked.

He urged people to check in on elderly relatives and friends during the heatwave, reminding them to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and rest whenever possible.

"Let us also think of the birds and animals during this extreme heat. A simple bowl of water placed outside your home, on balconies, terraces, or at shops can be a lifesaver for a thirsty bird. May our compassion guide us through these tough times," he expressed.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a severe heatwave has affected many regions in India, with Banda in Uttar Pradesh recording a staggering 47.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

A heatwave is officially declared in the plains when temperatures exceed 45 degrees, while those above 47 degrees are classified as severe heatwaves.
