Prime Minister Modi to Launch Major Infrastructure Projects in West Bengal and Assam
Upcoming Visit of Prime Minister Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit West Bengal and Assam on January 17 and 18, where he will inaugurate several train and road projects. Additionally, he will participate in a significant cultural event, "Bagurumba Dwo 2026," taking place in Assam. On January 17, Modi will arrive in Malda, where he will flag off India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train (Kamakhya) operating between Howrah and Guwahati at the Malda Town railway station. He will also lay the foundation stone for multiple railway and road infrastructure projects worth over ₹3,250 crores in Malda.
On January 18, around 3 PM, the Prime Minister will lay the groundwork for various development projects worth approximately ₹830 crores in Singur, located in the Hooghly district.
Cultural Celebration in Assam
Modi's itinerary includes a visit to Assam on January 17, where he will attend the historical cultural event "Bagurumba Dwo 2026," celebrating the rich heritage of the Bodo community. This event will feature over 10,000 artists performing the Bagurumba dance in a coordinated presentation. Furthermore, he will perform the ground-breaking ceremony for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project, which has an estimated cost exceeding ₹6,950 crores. This 86-kilometer-long corridor is an environmentally sensitive national highway project designed to balance infrastructure development with conservation efforts.
The project includes a 35-kilometer elevated wildlife corridor passing through Kaziranga National Park, a 21-kilometer bypass section, and the widening of a 30-kilometer stretch of NH-715 from two lanes to four. Its goal is to enhance regional connectivity while protecting the park's rich biodiversity.
New Train Services to Enhance Connectivity
During the event, the Prime Minister will also flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains: the Guwahati (Kamakhya)-Rohtak Amrit Bharat Express and the Dibrugarh-Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) Amrit Bharat Express. These new services aim to strengthen rail connectivity between Northeast and Northern India, ensuring safer, faster, and more convenient travel for passengers.
