Major Developments in Assam

Guwahati, Nov 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to inaugurate the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati and lay the groundwork for a significant Rs 10,601-crore brownfield Ammonia-Urea complex in Namrup.

This announcement followed a meeting between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Prime Minister in New Delhi on Tuesday.

During their 20-minute discussion, Sarma extended a formal invitation to Modi to inaugurate the airport terminal and initiate the fertiliser plant project, as stated in an official release from the Chief Minister's Office.

The new terminal at LGBI Airport is set to greatly improve air connectivity and increase passenger capacity throughout the Northeast.

Once operational, it will accommodate over 13 million passengers each year, significantly alleviating air traffic congestion and establishing Guwahati as a vital aviation hub for the region.

Equipped with cutting-edge facilities, advanced baggage handling systems, and enhanced passenger amenities, this terminal is anticipated to become one of the most modern airport infrastructures in Eastern India.

Officials are optimistic that it will significantly boost tourism, trade, and regional integration.

The Namrup Ammonia-Urea complex represents a substantial investment in Assam's industrial landscape.

With an estimated cost of Rs 10,601 crore, this brownfield expansion aims to modernize and enhance the existing Namrup Fertiliser Complex, ensuring a reliable supply of fertilisers for farmers in the Northeast.

Upon completion, the project is expected to reduce reliance on fertiliser imports and improve agricultural productivity in the region, while also creating job opportunities and fostering economic growth in upper Assam and surrounding areas.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister's ongoing support, stating, “We are thankful that Adarniya Modi Ji has graciously agreed to visit. We look forward to his arrival.”

Sarma emphasized that both initiatives align with the Prime Minister's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' and a 'Prosperous Northeast,' enhancing connectivity, industry, and agriculture in the state.

The Prime Minister's visit is anticipated soon, with detailed schedules to be confirmed following coordination between the Prime Minister's Office and the Assam government.
