Prime Minister Modi to Chair Security Meeting Amid Rising Tensions in the Middle East
Security Meeting Scheduled Following Prime Minister's Return
According to sources from the Indian government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to preside over a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in the national capital on Sunday, following the conclusion of his two-day visit. He is expected to arrive in Delhi around 9:30 PM. This meeting comes in the wake of escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly after coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel on various Iranian cities. These operations, dubbed Operation Roaring Lion and Operation Epic Fury, targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense systems, missile sites, and critical governmental infrastructure. Reports indicate that these strikes resulted in the deaths of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and four senior military and security officials, alongside significant explosions in Tehran and other major cities.
U.S. and Iran Engage in Escalating Conflict
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that these attacks were aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. In retaliation, Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones at U.S. bases and allies across the region, targeting nations including Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. On Sunday, Israel announced that it had conducted new strikes on 'Tehran's center.' Concurrently, Iran attacked the port of Duqm in Oman and targeted an oil tanker off the Omani coast.
Israeli Defense Minister's Stance on Ongoing Attacks
In light of the escalating crisis, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz remarked that attacks on Iran would continue 'as long as necessary' and would not cease 'until the objectives are achieved,' as reported by a media outlet.
Calls for Safe Return of Indian Citizens
Amid the growing crisis, several Indian leaders have urged for immediate measures to ensure the safe return of citizens stranded in affected countries. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to the Prime Minister, requesting the assurance of safety for Indians trapped in West Asia and offering state government support for facilities like helplines to facilitate their safe return. The Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need for the safety of Indian nationals in light of the escalating situation.
