Prime Minister Modi Launches Major Development Projects in Vadodara
Significant Development Initiatives Unveiled
Vadodara: On September 8, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects exceeding ₹35,000 crores in Vadodara, Gujarat. These initiatives encompass significant works related to railways, dedicated freight corridors, national highways, urban development, housing, and solar energy. According to government sources, these projects are expected to enhance connectivity and transportation systems in Gujarat and several regions of Madhya Pradesh.
Completion of Key Sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
A highlight of the Vadodara event was the dedication of three crucial sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) to the nation. These sections span a total of 326 route kilometers and were developed at a cost exceeding ₹20,700 crores.
The sections include New Sanand (North)-New Makarpura, New Umargam-New Safale, and New Safale-JNPT. Their operationalization is anticipated to strengthen freight connectivity between industrial hubs in Western India and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port.
Benefits for Freight Transport and Logistics
The Dedicated Freight Corridor aims to provide a separate and more efficient rail network for freight trains. This initiative is expected to expedite the movement of goods, reduce logistics costs, and alleviate pressure on congested rail routes.
The Prime Minister described this project as a significant achievement for 21st-century India, with the entire Dedicated Freight Corridor network extending over 2,800 kilometers.
Launch of New Railway Projects
PM Modi also laid the foundation for three railway projects spanning 329 kilometers, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The estimated cost for these projects exceeds ₹9,700 crores.
These projects include the third and fourth railway lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, gauge conversion of the Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar line, and the doubling of the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi rail line. They are expected to increase passenger and freight capacity while reducing congestion on the rail network.
New Train Services Introduced
The Prime Minister flagged off several new freight train services and inaugurated a new passenger train service between Tanda Road and Vadodara. This service is expected to benefit travelers from Vadodara, Chhota Udaipur, and Alirajpur.
Additionally, the Jobat-Tanda Road new rail line, developed under the Chhota Udaipur-Dahod project, was dedicated to the nation. This line could play a crucial role in connecting remote and tribal areas of Alirajpur to the national rail network.
Boost to Highway Network
In addition to railway projects, several initiatives were launched to enhance road connectivity. The foundation was laid for three national highway projects costing approximately ₹1,780 crores.
These projects include upgrading the Kamrej-Chalthan section of NH-48 to six lanes, constructing additional structures and major bridges over the Tapi and Narmada rivers on the Vadodara-Surat section, and building grade-separated structures at key junctions on NH-53.
Moreover, six-lane flyovers were initiated at Kandari Chowkadi and Luvara Patiya on the Vadodara-Surat route, aimed at improving road safety and alleviating traffic issues.
Major Projects for Gujarat
In addition to the central government’s railway and highway projects, the foundation and inauguration of approximately ₹2,600 crores worth of projects associated with the Gujarat government were also conducted.
These include the Ring Road Phase-2 by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority, a 110-megawatt floating solar project at Kadana Dam, and works related to the new office of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation. Housing projects under the Prime Minister's Housing Scheme and a water supply project for 11 villages in Eastern Vadodara were also part of the program.
Emphasis on Development and Connectivity
During the event in Vadodara, the Prime Minister emphasized that fast and improved connectivity is vital for a developed India. The government asserts that these railway, highway, and logistics-related projects will not only boost commercial activities but also enhance the efficiency of transportation systems.
Overall, the inauguration and foundation laying of projects worth over ₹35,000 crores in Vadodara is seen as a significant step for Gujarat's infrastructure. The completion of these projects in the future is expected to impact passenger transport, freight movement, industry, and regional connectivity.
