Prime Minister Modi's Address on Agricultural Development
In a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the Developed Agriculture Initiative, emphasizing the evolving market and changing consumer preferences. He highlighted the need for collaboration with farmers and state governments to transform agricultural systems and engage in discussions on modernizing India's agriculture. Modi mentioned that under this initiative, a team of scientists is advancing the 'Lab to Land' campaign.
He acknowledged the significant research conducted by agricultural scientists over the past decades, which has yielded positive results. Additionally, progressive farmers in the country have made substantial changes in agriculture through their innovative practices, leading to increased production. Modi stressed the importance of disseminating successful research and practices to all farmers, urging a renewed effort in this direction. The Developed Agriculture Initiative will provide ample opportunities for this.
The Prime Minister asserted that for India to progress, its agriculture must also evolve. He pointed out several key areas that the central government has consistently focused on, such as ensuring fair prices for farmers' produce, strengthening the agricultural economy, cultivating crops that meet both national and global needs, and addressing climate change challenges. He emphasized the need for modern farming techniques and the application of science and technology in agriculture. Over the past decade, the government has made significant strides in these areas, and now it is crucial to raise awareness among farmers through this campaign.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the 15-day 'Developed Agriculture Initiative' near Puri, Odisha, aimed at enhancing the relationship between farmers and agricultural research. With a target of 168.88 million tons of food grain production for Kharif 2025, Chouhan announced plans to cover nearly 20 million farmers to ensure the achievement of this goal.
Chouhan noted that in the Kharif season of 2024, the country produced 168.07 million tons of food grains. Experts believe that this target is easily attainable, suggesting that a 15-day program may not be necessary, as there was already a 12.3 million ton increase in production in just one season. A senior agricultural scientist remarked, 'Ambition should be higher to motivate all stakeholders to achieve the target.'
