The 1971 War and the Birth of Bangladesh
The 1971 war was fought between India and Pakistan from December 3 to December 16, 1971, leading to the creation of Bangladesh from East Pakistan. On December 16, celebrated as Vijay Diwas, Pakistani Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi surrendered in Dhaka, resulting in the capture of over 93,000 Pakistani soldiers. Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who was the Army Chief at the time, is credited with India's success in the 1971 war, although many others played equally significant roles in achieving this decisive victory over Pakistan.
