Prime Minister Modi's Response to Venezuela's Earthquake Tragedy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed profound sorrow regarding the catastrophic earthquakes that struck Venezuela, causing significant destruction and loss of life. On Thursday, he took to the social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter) to convey India's condolences to the citizens of Venezuela, assuring them of comprehensive humanitarian and medical assistance during this challenging time.

Casualties and Injuries Reported

According to recent data from an international news agency, the powerful earthquakes along Venezuela's Caribbean coast have resulted in at least 32 fatalities and left over 700 individuals severely injured. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate those trapped under debris, raising concerns that the death toll may increase.

Details of the Earthquakes

The US Geological Survey reported that two back-to-back earthquakes occurred on Wednesday evening, shaking the entire nation. The first quake struck near the coastal city of Morón at a depth of 22 kilometers, registering a magnitude of 7.2. Shortly after, a second, more powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 hit just 10 kilometers southwest of Morón at a depth of 10 kilometers. This event is being regarded as the most devastating earthquake in Venezuela in over a century, with tremors felt in neighboring countries.

State of Emergency Declared

In a late-night address, acting President Delcy Rodríguez urged the public to maintain peace and unity in the face of this disaster. The main airport, Simón Bolívar International Airport, has suffered extensive damage due to the tremors, leading to the suspension of all domestic and international flights.

Hospitals are on high alert, with the President ordering all doctors and healthcare professionals to report immediately to assist the injured. Additionally, classes in schools and colleges have been postponed for the next few days due to safety concerns.

The infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and communication systems, has been severely impacted, creating a dire situation in Venezuela. India's offer of assistance highlights the strong bilateral and humanitarian ties between the two nations.
