New Delhi, Oct 8: On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the death of Rupi Soren, the mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, highlighting her dedication to uplifting tribal communities.
Rupi Soren, who was approximately 80 years old, passed away on Wednesday at Hill View Hospital in Ranchi, where she had been receiving treatment for a long-term illness. Her health declined on Wednesday, leading doctors to place her on life support, and her death was later confirmed by doctors Deepak Gupta and Ujjwal Rai.
In a message on X, PM Modi stated, "I am saddened by the loss of Rupi Soren Ji. She dedicated her life to empowering tribal communities. My thoughts are with Hemant Ji, Kalpana Ji, and their entire family during this difficult time."
Rupi Soren's passing comes nearly a year after the death of her husband, Shibu Soren, who passed away in Delhi on August 4, 2025. His death was a significant loss for the Soren family, with Rupi remaining a crucial emotional support for them.
Married to Shibu Soren since January 1, 1962, Rupi stood by him throughout his extensive political and social endeavors, managing family responsibilities while he was deeply engaged in the Jharkhand movement.
Shibu Soren was a key figure in the Jharkhand movement and a founding member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), also serving as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
The JMM honored Rupi Soren as a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and endurance, noting that she remained a steadfast presence alongside Shibu even after his passing.
The party described her death as an immense loss for both Jharkhand and the nation, emphasizing that her absence would be profoundly felt by Hemant Soren, his family, and the state's residents.
