Modi Meets Iranian and Russian Foreign Ministers

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the BRICS Foreign Ministers' summit in New Delhi. This meeting took place as part of a two-day gathering of BRICS foreign ministers and senior representatives held from May 14 to 15 in the capital. Modi also participated in an official family photo with ministers and representatives from member and partner countries.

Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed several foreign ministers and senior diplomats at the summit venue, Bharat Mandapam. Among the first leaders he greeted was Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also arrived at the venue for the high-level meeting. In place of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was in Beijing during U.S. President Donald Trump's visit, the Chinese ambassador to India, Zhou Feihong, represented Beijing.

Jaishankar also welcomed Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos Hessebon. Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, was also present at the summit. Prior to the meeting, Jaishankar had discussions with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in New Delhi. This summit brought together foreign ministers and senior officials from BRICS member and observer countries to discuss global and regional issues.
