Prime Minister Modi Embarks on Crucial Six-Day Foreign Tour Amid Global Geopolitical Changes
Overview of the Foreign Tour
In light of the shifting global geopolitical landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to commence a significant six-day foreign trip starting Friday. During this journey, he will visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. This trip aims not only to elevate bilateral relations but also to enhance India's global standing in sectors such as trade, defense, innovation, and green energy.
First Stop: UAE
Modi's initial destination will be the UAE, where he is scheduled to meet with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The primary goal of this meeting is to advance the comprehensive strategic partnership and exchange views on conflicts in West Asia. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders will have the opportunity to discuss bilateral issues, particularly energy cooperation, along with regional and international matters of mutual interest.
Strengthening Trade Relations
The Ministry emphasized that this visit will bolster significant trade and investment ties between the two nations. The UAE ranks as India's third-largest trading partner and has been a major source of investment over the past 25 years. Additionally, with over 4.5 million Indians residing in the UAE, this trip will also address issues related to the welfare of the Indian community.
Next Destination: Netherlands
Following the UAE, Modi will travel to the Netherlands from May 15 to 17, marking his second visit since 2017. He is expected to meet with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, as well as hold discussions with Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The visit aims to strengthen high-level meetings and cooperation in various fields, including defense, security, innovation, green hydrogen, semiconductors, and water.
Visit to Sweden
From the Netherlands, Modi will proceed to Sweden for a two-day visit from May 17 to 18 at the invitation of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. This follows Modi's previous trip to Sweden for the first India-Nordic summit in 2018. The discussions will focus on reviewing bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for enhancing trade, which is projected to reach $7.75 billion by 2025.
Focus Areas in Sweden
During their talks, both leaders will emphasize promoting bilateral relations in areas such as green transition, artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defense, space, people-to-people connections, and climate change. They will also address the 'European Round Table for Industry' alongside Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
Participation in Nordic Summit in Norway
In the fourth phase of his tour, Modi will attend the third India-Nordic summit in Norway from May 18 to 19 and engage in bilateral talks with Norwegian leadership. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway since 1983. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre highlighted India's pivotal role in climate, technology, trade, and international security.
Final Stop: Italy
Concluding his tour, Modi will visit Italy from May 19 to 20 at the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This will be his first visit since the G7 summit in June 2024. During this trip, he will meet with President Sergio Mattarella and hold discussions with Prime Minister Meloni.
