Celebrating the Legacy of Somnath Temple
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Somnath Amrit Mahotsav, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the historic Somnath Temple's reconstruction in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and recognized as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, served as the focal point for grand celebrations reflecting India's rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The festival honors the temple's restoration, which was initiated by India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, in 1951.
During the event, Modi also conducted a roadshow from the helipad to Veer Hamirji Circle, where thousands gathered along the approximately one-and-a-half-kilometer route to greet him. As he passed, citizens waved flags, chanted slogans, and welcomed him warmly. He remarked on the significance of celebrating the 75 years of the divine presence of Mahadev, the creator of the universe, and the occasion of the temple's reconstruction.
Modi expressed his deep devotion to Somnath, recalling how many times he had visited and bowed before the deity. He reflected on his previous visit a few months ago during the Somnath Swabhimaan festival, emphasizing the pride in the temple's immortality even after a millennium of destruction. He noted that the celebration is not merely about two events but a chance to experience a thousand years of spiritual journey.
He highlighted that the restoration of Somnath Temple on this day, 75 years ago, was a significant milestone. He connected the temple's revival to India's independence in 1947, stating that the temple's consecration in 1951 proclaimed the nation's free spirit. Modi asserted that the Amrit Mahotsav is not just a celebration of the past but a source of inspiration for the next thousand years. He also pointed out that this day is special for another reason: it marks the anniversary of India's nuclear tests conducted on May 11, 1998, showcasing the nation's capabilities to the world.
Modi remarked on the global powers that sought to suppress India, imposing various constraints and blocking economic opportunities. Following the nuclear tests on May 11, the world reacted strongly against India. However, on May 13, two more tests were conducted, demonstrating India's unwavering political will despite international pressure. Under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the BJP government showcased that the nation comes first and that no force could bend India. The nuclear tests were named Operation Shakti, reflecting the tradition of worshipping strength alongside divinity.
