Prime Minister Modi Addresses Global Challenges at G7 Summit

Modi Discusses Key Global Issues at G7 Summit
During the second day of the G7 summit in Kanaskis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with world leaders on significant global challenges, including terrorism, trade, and development. While addressing the G7 outreach session, he reiterated India's firm stance against terrorism, warned against double standards, and called for unified global action.
Call for Global Action Against Terrorism
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for accelerated global action against terrorism, urging G7 leaders to take strict measures against those who promote and support it. The G7, an informal group of the world's seven advanced economies—France, the USA, the UK, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the European Union—meets annually to discuss global economic and geopolitical issues.
Accountability for Terrorism Supporters
In his address at the G7 contact session in Canada, Modi stressed that countries supporting terrorism must be held accountable. He stated, "Our thinking and policies for global peace and prosperity must be clear—if a country supports terrorism, it must pay the price."
Warning Against Double Standards
Modi pointed out the inconsistency in global responses, saying, "On one hand, we rush to impose various sanctions based on our priorities, while on the other, countries that openly support terrorism are rewarded." The spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, noted that Modi thanked leaders for condemning the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
Accelerating Global Action Against Terrorism
He urged leaders to expedite global efforts against terrorism and highlighted the necessity of strict actions against those who promote and support it. The terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 resulted in 26 fatalities, prompting India to initiate 'Operation Sindoor' targeting terrorist infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Addressing Global South Concerns
During his speech, Modi also called for attention to the concerns and priorities of the 'Global South,' asserting that India sees it as its responsibility to voice these issues on the global stage. The term 'Global South' typically refers to economically underdeveloped countries. Modi stated, "India has chosen the path of inclusive development based on the fundamental principles of availability, accessibility, affordability, and acceptability."
Ensuring Energy Security Through Sustainable Means
Jaiswal reported that Modi highlighted the need for ensuring energy security for all through sustainable and green pathways, elaborating on India's global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Disaster Resilient Infrastructure Coalition, and Global Biofuel Alliance.
Collaboration for Technological Advancement
Modi remarked, "AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a technology that requires significant energy. If there is a way to sustainably meet the energy needs of a technology-driven society, it is through renewable energy." He emphasized that while the previous century was marked by competition for energy, this century necessitates collaboration on technology.
Addressing AI Concerns
The spokesperson noted that Modi called for addressing global governance issues related to AI and fostering innovation in this field. He expressed concern over 'deep fakes,' stressing that any content created with AI should be clearly labeled as such. Deep fakes involve digitally altering a person's face or body in images or videos, often appearing convincingly real.
Meaningful Discussions on Global Challenges
Earlier, Modi mentioned that he had meaningful discussions with G7 leaders on major global challenges and shared aspirations for a better planet. He shared a group photo with the leaders on social media, stating, "Together for global progress! Meaningful discussions on shared aspirations for a better planet with G7 leaders."
Welcoming Remarks from Canadian Counterpart
Jaiswal added in a separate post that there is a collective commitment to addressing global challenges and promoting shared values. He shared a photo of Modi with G7 leaders and invited partners. Prior to this, Modi was welcomed by his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney during his first visit to Canada in a decade for the G7 contact session.
