President Murmu Commends Athletes
On Monday, President Droupadi Murmu lauded the Indian team for their outstanding achievements at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow. She particularly emphasized the remarkable contributions of female athletes, who secured eight out of the total 13 gold medals for the nation.
In a message shared via Rashtrapati Bhavan on X, the President expressed her joy regarding India's performance and extended her congratulations to all 39 medalists and the entire contingent. "I am thrilled to see our athletes excel at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. It is especially gratifying that women athletes have brought home 8 of the 13 gold medals," stated President Murmu.
"My heartfelt congratulations to all 39 medalists and every member of the contingent who played a role in this success," she added. The President expressed her optimism that Indian athletes will continue to achieve even greater success in future international competitions, stating, "I am confident that our sportspersons will bring even more glory to the nation in upcoming events."
India Set to Host 2030 Centenary Games
The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of intense competition, with Scotland officially transferring the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition in 2030 during a spectacular closing ceremony.
The upcoming 2030 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, marking India as only the second country, after Australia, to host this multi-sport event more than once. India previously hosted the Games in New Delhi in 2010. The flag and baton were handed over to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
Impressive Performance Despite Smaller Team
India celebrated a successful outing, finishing fourth in the overall medal tally with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze.
While this total is lower than the 61 medals achieved in Birmingham in 2022, the circumstances provide a different perspective. Notably, 30 of those medals were earned in sports that were not included in the Glasgow program. With a squad of only 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India maintained its fourth-place standing and achieved a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the standout performer, winning two medals.
Looking Ahead to Ahmedabad 2030
With the ceremonial handover concluded, attention now turns to Ahmedabad, which is set to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
