President Appoints Harivansh to Rajya Sabha Following Retirement of Former Chief Justice
Harivansh's Reappointment to the Rajya Sabha
President Droupadi Murmu has officially appointed Harivansh as a member of the Rajya Sabha, filling the vacancy left by the retirement of former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Harivansh's term in the upper house concluded on April 9. According to a government notification, this appointment is made under the powers conferred by Article 80, Clause (1)(a) and Clause (3) of the Constitution of India, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of a nominated member.
At 69 years old, Harivansh has previously served two terms representing Bihar in the Rajya Sabha and has held the position of Deputy Chairman of the upper house. His nomination is based on the powers granted by Article 3, read in conjunction with Clause (1)(a) of the same article, to fill the seat vacated by Ranjan Gogoi.
Harivansh brings extensive parliamentary experience, having participated in several significant committees within the upper house. He has been a member of the Agriculture Committee, Business Advisory Committee, Rules Committee, and the General Purposes Committee. Additionally, he has chaired important committees, including the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme Committee and the Privileges Committee, contributing to legislative and policy discussions, particularly through his involvement in the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Significant Legislative Contributions
He has also played a crucial role in various select and joint committees, including the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, where he was instrumental in legislative scrutiny. Furthermore, he has served on several advisory and consultative bodies, including the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Content Advisory Committee of Rajya Sabha Television.
