Premier League Launches NEXTGEN Coach Programme in Goa to Enhance Grassroots Football
Introduction to the NEXTGEN Coach Programme
From May 10 to 13, 2026, the Premier League conducted its first NEXTGEN Coach Programme in Goa, reinforcing its dedication to nurturing grassroots football in India.
Coaching Sessions and Participation
The four-day event gathered over 30 coaches from the OSCAR Foundation, who engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions centered on the League's coaching techniques. Premier League international community coaches led these sessions, with support from experienced Indian coaches who are integral to the League's local initiatives.
Objectives and Approach of the Programme
The NEXTGEN Coach Programme aims to utilize the Premier League's nearly two decades of global experience to empower local coaches. It focuses on equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence to conduct football sessions that are safe, inclusive, and enjoyable, thereby increasing access to quality football for youth.
Growth and Engagement in India
Initially launched as a youth tournament, the NEXTGEN Initiative has evolved to include coach education, marking a significant advancement in the Premier League's involvement in India. This shift coincides with the first anniversary of the League's Mumbai office, which was established in April 2025 to enhance its engagement with the Indian football community.
Building on Previous Initiatives
The NEXTGEN Coach Programme builds upon the Community Coach Development Initiative held in Mumbai last October, which was a collaboration with the British Council. This earlier programme trained 27 community coaches, expanding football access across India and culminating in an event featuring Premier League legend Michael Owen.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
Hrishikesh Shende, Managing Director of Premier League India, emphasized the importance of the League's India office in fostering sustainable football growth. He stated that initiatives like NEXTGEN Coach are crucial for investing in both the sport and the communities that will shape its future.
Impact of Previous Collaborations
The Goa programme also builds on the success of earlier initiatives like Premier Skills and Premier League Primary Stars, which have reached 18 states in India, benefiting over 164,000 young individuals and supporting more than 7,500 coaches and educators.
Insights from an Alumni Coach
Shekhar Kerkar, an alumnus coach, shared his perspective on the transformative power of the NEXTGEN Coach Programme. He noted that such initiatives empower coaches with essential leadership and practical skills, enabling them to effect positive change in their communities.
