Silchar, July 4: On Saturday, the Cachar district authorities initiated precautionary actions following an incident where a tanker transporting formalin was involved in an accident on National Highway-27, between Jatinga and Lampu in the adjacent Dima Hasao district. This mishap resulted in a leak of the chemical into the Jatinga river.

In response to an advisory from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Dima Hasao, the DDMA of Cachar has instructed relevant departments to promptly implement measures aimed at protecting public health and mitigating any possible environmental repercussions.

Officials have been tasked with conducting water quality assessments and maintaining ongoing surveillance of the Jatinga river's condition.

Special attention is being given to public water supply systems, particularly at intake points that source water from the river, to avert any contamination of drinking water.

Authorities have also been directed to prevent livestock from accessing or drinking from the affected areas of the river.

The district administration has mandated strict monitoring to halt the catching, transportation, and sale of fish from the Jatinga river until it is confirmed safe for consumption.

Residents are being advised against using river water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, irrigation, or any domestic activities until further notice.

The advisory also encourages anyone experiencing symptoms such as eye or skin irritation, respiratory issues, nausea, dizziness, or vomiting after contact with the river water to seek immediate medical assistance.

An official statement indicated that the Additional District Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of DDMA, Cachar, has instructed all departments to rigorously enforce the advisory, collaborate with local authorities and stakeholders, and provide action reports to the Deputy Commissioner's office promptly.

As part of the response strategy, officials are also expected to initiate awareness campaigns in villages along the riverbanks to inform residents about the health risks associated with the contaminated water.

The administration has urged the public to remain composed and to rely solely on official communications and advisories from district authorities.

Formalin, which is a 37–40% solution of formaldehyde in water, often mixed with methanol, is extremely hazardous. It is toxic if ingested and can lead to severe irritation or burning sensations in the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines; high doses can be fatal.
