Violence Erupts During Election Campaign in Tezpur


Tezpur, March 31: A disturbing incident of pre-election violence occurred in the Naduar LAC area, where multiple Congress party members sustained serious injuries during a campaign rally near Tezpur University in Sonitpur district.


Reports indicate that Sunil Chhetri, the Congress candidate for Naduar LAC, was leading a rally on Monday when the situation escalated.


Following the conclusion of the rally, a group of masked individuals, allegedly affiliated with the BJP according to Congress supporters, launched an attack on the Congress workers, resulting in significant injuries.


Local police quickly intervened to manage the chaos and transported the injured individuals to a nearby hospital for medical attention.


In the midst of the turmoil, Chhetri fell and suffered a head injury, necessitating his hospitalization as well.


The Assam Gorkha Sammelan condemned the violence, calling on the State Election Commission to take action and urging law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.


They emphasized the need for a democratic atmosphere and the assurance of fair electoral practices in the region. An investigation by the police is currently underway.


Previously, Sonitpur district has experienced similar instances of pre-election violence, with clashes between party supporters reported in both Sonitpur and neighboring Nagaon districts, raising alarms about the law and order situation during the election period.
