Potential Extension of US-Iran Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Tensions
Ceasefire Negotiations Underway
A delicate pause in the escalating US-Iran tensions might see an extension, as both parties have reportedly reached an 'in-principle agreement' to prolong the ceasefire for at least two additional weeks, according to sources. Mediators, including regional players like Pakistan, are working swiftly to finalize this extension before the current ceasefire concludes on April 22. This proposed extension aims to create space for renewed diplomatic efforts and avert a return to full-scale conflict following weeks of severe clashes.
However, the situation remains precarious. A senior official from the US indicated that Washington has yet to formally approve the extension, despite ongoing backchannel discussions with Tehran. This highlights the fragile nature of the 'in-principle' agreement, which still requires alignment on both political and military fronts.
The ceasefire has faced significant challenges, particularly due to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, which was enacted after previous negotiations fell through. Iran has warned that it may close crucial regional trade routes, including essential oil corridors, if the blockade persists.
Key issues remain unresolved, such as Iran's uranium enrichment activities, navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz, and Tehran's demands for reparations related to wartime damages. Meanwhile, military posturing continues, with the US bolstering its troop presence in the area even as diplomatic initiatives ramp up.
Trump's Statements on Hormuz
‘Permanently Opening Hormuz’: Trump
Earlier, Donald Trump announced his intention to 'permanently open' the Strait of Hormuz, claiming that China has agreed not to supply arms to Iran. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Beijing was 'very happy' with this decision and hinted at a broader agreement with Xi Jinping. He mentioned that both nations are 'working together smartly' and suggested a potential meeting between the two leaders.
Trump stated, 'China is very happy that I am permanently opening the Strait of Hormuz. I am doing it for them, also - And the World. This situation will never happen again. They have agreed not to send weapons to Iran. President Xi will give me a big, fat hug when I get there in a few weeks.' He emphasized their cooperative efforts, saying, 'We are working together smartly, and very well! Doesn’t that beat fighting??? BUT REMEMBER, we are very good at fighting, if we have to - far better than anyone else!!!'
These comments come in light of confirmed reports that Trump personally reached out to Xi Jinping, urging China to refrain from arming Iran. According to a report, Trump mentioned that he wrote to Xi, who responded by confirming that China was not supplying weapons to Tehran.
