Potential Cabinet Reshuffle in Uttar Pradesh Ahead of Elections

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is poised for a potential cabinet reshuffle as the BJP strategizes for the 2027 assembly elections and local body polls. This significant change could see over a dozen ministers replaced and around 15 new faces introduced to enhance governance and representation. Cabinet Expansion on the Horizon

In Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, a cabinet reshuffle may be imminent. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking to revamp its political strategy ahead of the 2027 assembly elections and upcoming local body elections. Party officials are contemplating these changes to enhance governance and electoral outreach. This reshuffle could be significant, potentially removing over a dozen ministers while introducing around 15 new faces, including legislators and party leaders. The aim is to achieve a better balance in caste and regional representation. Reports suggest that these considerations are inspired by the Gujarat model, which saw a major cabinet overhaul before elections.

Currently, the Uttar Pradesh government comprises 54 ministers, including Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brijesh Pathak. This group includes 21 cabinet ministers, 14 ministers of state with independent charge, and 19 other state ministers. The constitution allows for a maximum of 60 ministers, leaving room for six additional appointments. The last cabinet expansion occurred on March 5, 2024, prior to the Lok Sabha elections, when leaders such as Om Prakash Rajbhar, RLD's Anil Kumar, Sunil Sharma, and Dara Singh Chauhan were inducted into the cabinet.

Recent organizational changes within the BJP have further fueled discussions about this reshuffle. Pankaj Chaudhary was appointed as the state BJP president in December 2025, while Nitin Naveen took on a significant national role. Insiders within the party indicate that these developments have accelerated discussions regarding both cabinet changes and broader organizational restructuring. Within the BJP and the RSS, opinions vary on the extent of the reshuffle. One faction advocates for a comprehensive overhaul, suggesting that half of the current ministers be replaced. This approach aims to redirect existing ministers to strengthen the party at the grassroots level while assigning governance roles to new faces.

Conversely, another faction within the party is cautious about implementing such extensive changes right before elections. This perspective suggests that any reshuffle should be limited, allowing ministers to retain their positions but possibly reassigned to new departments. Concerns have also been raised that removing ministers could lead to dissatisfaction or defection. Meanwhile, complaints against some ministers have reached both state and central leadership. Feedback from legislators, party workers, and RSS channels indicates issues related to performance and discontent among grassroots workers.
