As Portugal gears up for their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey, they will pay homage to former forward Diogo Jota by donning unique commemorative wristbands. This announcement was made by midfielder Vitinha ahead of their Group K match against the Democratic Republic of Congo next week.
The wristbands, gifted to the team by Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, display the names of all current players alongside Jota's name. Tragically, Jota lost his life in a car accident in northwestern Spain last year, and he is fondly remembered by the national team. His teammates have decided to honor his legacy by wearing these wristbands during the tournament.
Vitinha Discusses the Wristbands
"The story behind the wristband is that during our meeting with the Prime Minister, he presented us with this wristband," Vitinha shared with reporters. "It was designed for us to wear on the pitch, featuring all players' names along with Diogo Jota's special name," he elaborated.
He also mentioned, "We were given the option to decide how and when to wear it, whether during the day or the match. We accepted it with great affection and chose to wear it during the games."
Portugal's Mindset for the Tournament
Portugal is set to kick off their World Cup campaign on Wednesday, entering the tournament with high hopes following a successful streak in recent years. However, Vitinha emphasized the importance of a cautious approach despite the team's impressive talent.
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, who has celebrated consecutive UEFA Champions League victories, stated that humility will be crucial for Portugal's success, especially after their quarter-final exit in Qatar four years ago. "I wouldn't label us as favorites; we possess great quality and the potential to progress far in the tournament," he remarked. "We understand that humility and playing the right game are essential. We have the talent; we just need to align our technical and tactical strategies," he added.
