Pornanong Phatlum Secures Fourth Women's Indian Open Title
Pornanong Phatlum Achieves Historic Victory
Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum has made history by winning the Women's Indian Open for the fourth time, finishing four shots ahead of India's Vani Kapoor on Sunday. The accomplished LPGA player, aged 36, previously triumphed at the DLF Golf and Country Club in 2008, 2009, and 2012, all at the Arnold Palmer Course. This time, she dominated the Gary Player Course, achieving a remarkable four-day total of 11-under 277, as stated in a press release.
Final Round Highlights
After rounds of 72, 71, and 69, Pornanong saved her best performance for the final day, delivering a flawless, bogey-free 7-under 65. This impressive finish showcased her skill and set her apart from the competition. Although Asian Games gold medalist Pranavi Urs attempted to challenge early on, the contest primarily unfolded between Pornanong and Vani, who concluded the tournament at 7-under 281 (73, 69, 69, 70).
Tournament Standings
Defending champion Shannon Tan struggled with a sore wrist, finishing in third place at 4-under 284 (68, 77, 67, 72). Czechia's Sara Kouskova followed closely at 3-under 285 (69, 72, 73, 71), while Pranavi Urs tied for fourth at 2-under 286 (70, 70, 73, 72). Three Indian players made it into the top ten, with Tvesa Malik, another Hero Brand Ambassador, finishing tied for seventh at 1-under 287 (71, 73, 71, 72).
Vani Kapoor's Performance
Vani achieved her best result on the Ladies European Tour (LET) with a second-place finish. Starting the final day with a narrow one-shot lead, she began strongly with four birdies in five holes. However, a missed short birdie putt on the 9th hole disrupted her momentum. Despite the disappointment, this solid performance positions her well for a full card on the LET for the upcoming season.
Pornanong's Journey Back to Form
Returning to India after a long absence, Pornanong expressed her joy at winning again. "India feels like home, and this fourth victory is incredibly special. I never expected to win again; it feels surreal," she remarked. Her journey back to form has been challenging, and she even considered retirement earlier this year. However, she is now focused on continuing her career and achieving more victories on tour.
Player Insights
Vani reflected on her performance, acknowledging the pressure she faced. "I gave it my all, and everything went according to plan. I made many birdies, especially under pressure, but I also made mistakes, which is part of the game," she stated. Pranavi, despite battling a stomach bug, remained optimistic about her performance, stating, "I’m proud of how I handled myself throughout the week, even if the result wasn’t what I wanted."
