Washington, Apr 13: Pope Leo XIV, the first pope born in the United States, responded to President Donald Trump's recent comments, emphasizing that the Vatican's advocacy for peace is rooted in the teachings of the Gospel and expressing his lack of fear regarding the Trump administration.
While speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane heading to Algeria, Leo stated, "Equating my message with the president's actions reflects a misunderstanding of the Gospel's essence." He expressed his commitment to the church's mission in today's world.
He clarified that his call for peace and his critique of the "delusion of omnipotence" driving conflicts, including the Iran wars, were not personal attacks against Trump or anyone else.
"I will not engage in debates. My statements are not intended as personal criticisms. The Gospel clearly states, 'Blessed are the peacemakers,'" Leo remarked.
He continued, stating, "I will boldly proclaim the Gospel's message and encourage everyone to seek avenues for peace and reconciliation, striving to prevent war whenever possible." He reiterated, "I have no apprehension regarding the Trump administration."
In a sharp critique, Trump had previously stated that he believed Pope Leo was not performing well in his role and labeled him as "very liberal," suggesting that the pontiff should cease his alignment with the Radical Left.
Upon returning to Washington from Florida, Trump took to social media to express his discontent with Leo, maintaining his stance even after deplaning, declaring, "I'm not a fan of Pope Leo." He added, "If I weren't in the White House, Leo wouldn't be in the Vatican," urging the pope to focus on his papal duties rather than political matters, which he claimed were detrimental to both Leo and the Catholic Church.
Trump's remarks followed Leo's comments about the "delusion of omnipotence" contributing to the US-Israel conflict in Iran. While it is not uncommon for popes and presidents to have differing views, it is rare for a pope to openly criticize a US leader, making Trump's response equally unusual.
In his post, Trump also stated, "Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy," adding, "I don't want a Pope who thinks it's acceptable for Iran to possess a Nuclear Weapon."
