Overcoming Adversity in Wrestling

In the intense world of wrestling, where optimal fitness is crucial, competing with an injured shoulder poses a serious challenge. Yet, for Poonam Oraon from Jharkhand, this challenge became a stepping stone to victory as she secured a gold medal at the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games 2026. Despite enduring pain throughout her matches, Poonam's journey is a testament to resilience.

A Painful Path to Victory

During the final of the women's 50kg category at the Khelo India Tribal Games, every tackle Poonam made was accompanied by a grimace from her shoulder injury. Having dislocated her shoulder at the age of 10, the pain has been a recurring issue. Just before the final, the discomfort intensified, necessitating a heavy strap on her left shoulder. Nevertheless, she triumphed over Telangana's K Geetha, marking her first gold medal in a national competition.

Resilience and Determination

"How could I give up? Nine years ago, my shoulder was dislocated. It healed, but the pain persists. If I haven't given up all these years, how could I now?" Poonam expressed to SAI Media after her victory. She reflected on her journey, stating, "Winning a gold medal feels like a dream come true. This injury pales in comparison to the pain of not winning gold for nine years."

Background and Early Struggles

Originating from Suiyabar village in Jharkhand's Chatra district, Poonam faced significant hurdles after starting wrestling in 2017, including a year-long hiatus due to her shoulder injury. Upon her return, she earned bronze medals at the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) national meets in 2018 and 2019, but the quest for gold continued.

Support System and Future Goals

Poonam admitted that she wasn't in peak condition before the competition. "My family advised against competing, but my coach and support staff had faith in me. Their encouragement helped me achieve this gold medal, which is incredibly special after six years of hard work," she shared. Currently, she balances her wrestling career with academics, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Ranchi University, with aspirations to join the Jharkhand team for the Junior Nationals. "My next goal is to qualify for the Junior Nationals and maintain this winning streak," she added.
