Poll Reveals Voter Discontent with Trump's Administration
Majority of Voters Criticize Trump's Governance
A recent survey indicates that 56% of voters believe the Trump administration has struggled to effectively manage the federal government. Surprisingly, these figures come from a Fox News poll. Among Republicans, 20% share this sentiment, while a significant majority of independents (70%) and Democrats (90%) agree. Notably, 40% of non-MAGA Republicans also express similar concerns, leading to an overall 43% who feel the White House has been competent in its governance.
Declining Approval Ratings for Trump
Where has Trump's approval fallen?
Trump's job performance ratings have taken a hit across various issues, including immigration (46% approval, 54% disapproval), relations with China (42-57), foreign policy (40-60), Iran (37-63), economic management (34-66), government spending (33-67), and inflation (28-72). His only favorable rating comes from border security, where he stands at 53-47. Overall, only 42% of voters approve of his presidency, while 58% disapprove, a slight decline from last month's 41-59 rating.
These findings reflect a changing sentiment, with even some Republican voters expressing discontent. Fox News attempted to mitigate the negative implications by noting that Trump's ratings are not entirely unprecedented, drawing parallels to Barack Obama's 2015 ratings of 44% and Joe Biden's recent figures of 38% in 2022, down from 51% in 2021.
Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who collaborated on the Fox News polls, remarked, "Voters tend to be critical of all presidents, which may provide little solace for the White House. The president's ratings illustrate the challenges in appealing to independents and those outside the party."
Criticism of Trump's Cabinet
Trump's officials also under fire
Members of Trump's cabinet are also facing negative evaluations. Vice President Vance has an approval rating that is 11 points underwater (44% approve, 55% disapprove), while Secretary of State Rubio's rating is down by 12 points (44-56), and Secretary of Defence Hegseth's rating is negative by 17 points (41-58). Among Republicans, Vance enjoys higher approval (84%) compared to Rubio (77%) and Hegseth (76%). Each official's ratings are significantly more favorable among MAGA Republicans compared to non-MAGA Republicans, with Vance receiving about 10 points more support from MAGA voters.
Concerns About Trump's Mental Fitness
Are voters wary of Trump's mental health?
The latest poll presents a largely negative view of Trump's personal attributes. Over half of the respondents believe the 80-year-old lacks empathy, sound judgment, mental stability, and the temperament necessary for effective leadership. Concerns regarding his temperament have risen, with approximately 60% stating he does not possess the right temperament, an increase from 52% prior to the 2024 election, although similar to sentiments during his 2016 campaign. A majority (57%) also question his judgment, although 42% still believe he possesses it, showing some improvement from 2016 lows.
On the issue of empathy, more than 60% of voters feel Trump does not care about individuals like them, a decline from 44% last year. Additionally, 55% express doubts about his mental fitness for office, a noticeable rise since late 2024 and approaching previous highs. Concerns about mental fitness were also prevalent during the previous administration, with about 65% of voters expressing similar worries about Joe Biden as he concluded his re-election campaign in 2024.
